Cigar Journal 1/2015 Spring Edition

March 11, 2015. The Spring edition of the Cigar Journal will be released worldwide in a few days. The following is a preview of some of the things you’ll find in the new issue.

The Davidoff Renaissance: When Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard took charge of the largest family-run cigar business four years ago, Davidoff was struggling with an antiquated brand image and a lack of innovation. The reorganisation of the business was followed by successful relaunches, the opening of flagship stores around the world and the consolidation of a new image. One thing is clear: Davidoff’s will and potential to become the No. 1 world brand.

The Passionada: In the new issue, editor-in-chief Katja Rauch discusses the results of a survey of women cigar smokers. This international study conducted by the IWCS indicates what women think about cigars specially created for women and what formats they prefer. The study shows that the trade has not yet become fully aware of this growing market segment.

Terroir and tobacco - The taste of the region: Of the many factors that influence the taste of a cigar, terroir is one of the most important. Davidoff’s Henke Kelner gave us an opportunity to smoke tobaccos from different cultivation regions in a comparison tasting. In his article, Manuel Fröhlich discusses the influences of the soil components on a cigar’s strength, density and aroma.

Norma - Madame Behike: When, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary cohiba in 2006, a special edition of 100 humidors were produced containing a cohiba named Behike, all 4,000 cigars were rolled by a single woman. Norma Fernández Sastre has been rolling cohiba cigars since she was 17, and is seen as a torcedora in a class of her own. Claudia Puszkar met the retired cigar-roller for an interview.

Head of production at Perdomo: Simon Lundh visited Sarah Gonzalez in Nicaragua’s cigar capital Estelí, and accompanied her through her day in order to find out more about her work and her life. The native of Cuba is head of production at Perdomo Cigars, and discusses Cuba, the USA and the responsibilities that her job involve.

What makes vintage Havanas into collectors’ items: In his column "The Long View", Simon Chase examines in this issue the question of what cigars are worth collecting and what it is that makes Havanas collectibles in the first place. He reports on auctions where huge sums of money are offered, and what collectors should actually pay attention to.

Tasting - 60 cigars: With 93 points each, the Cohiba Maduro 5 Secretos and the Pinolero Robusto were the best-ranked cigars in the new tasting. Amongst the 60 cigars that we smoked for you for the Spring 2015 issue there are, as always, a number of classics from the producers’ portfolios, newcomers and new lines. These include the new Davidoff Winston Churchill and the Cuban Edición Regional Suiza 2014. Read more in the Spring issue of the Cigar Journal.
